• Girlfriend Jeans: The Style That Suits Everyone

Where would we be without jeans? Once a basic staple, they are now a fashion-forward must-have. The ‘Girlfriend Jean’ has quickly become the cool girl's staple - but what are they?

While the classic ‘boyfriend jean’ hit the scene in the '90s, showing off perma-tanned and uber-toned midriffs, and have evolved into the slouchy weekend go-to we know and love, the girlfriend jean is the fresher, more flattering fit on the scene.

First hitting stores last year, the silhouette joined the plethora of (slightly ludicrously named) styles: mom, boyfriend, kickflare… The difference? It’s a classic fit, a bit tighter on the hip, higher on the waist with a straight leg cut.

They’re kind of like the middle ground between your skinny and boyfriend jeans that, if you’re anything like us and trying to wean yourself off skinny styles, is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s not too statement, but a style you can work into your wardrobe and wear for seasons to come.

To avoid them looking like those straight leg jeans you wore as a teenager (and were rather happy to see the back of), make sure they cut just above the ankle – whether it’s where the hem sits or because you've rolled them up. They can be styled with everything from shirts and slouchy tees to wearing your dress over them. Yep, it’s the perfect day-to-evening look we are obsessed with right now. We also think they look great with flats and slipper shoes as they show off your ankle and foot (sounds creepy, but trust us, it matters).

So what’s new for this season when it comes to the GF style. Inspired by the denim powerhouse Vetement, we can't help obsess over Mango’s two-tone panelling and MiH’s seriously raw hems. Feel free to also cut your own hems off too, and we’re actually giving you double points if you can cut a stepped-hem.

You’ll be pleased to know they are everywhere. Whilst the likes of Gap and Levi’s will put ‘the girlfriend’ label on them, most other stores, like Zara and MiH, won’t use the actual term - it’s something you’re just going to have to spot. But fear not, we’ve hunted them all down for you in our easy-to-shop edit below. Whether you want to spend £30 or £300, we’ve got it covered.

  • If There's One Handbag To Buy This Christmas, It's This Mulberry

It's that time of year again, our big chance to get that designer handbag we've been longing for all year round. The Christmas List. I am totally #handbagobsessed and constantly have my beady eye looking out for the new bags on the block, but I also want one that will last me for seasons to come. With that being said, being in the fast-fashion world we live in today, we can all get caught up in buying the latest trend piece and find ourselves trying to flog it on Ebay the following Christmas. So it's important not to make this mistake when it comes to a handbag, they're an expensive purchase so should last you for years.

Mulberry's 'Brimley' has it all. Its top handle feature means it's a ring leader in this seasons hand held bag trend, one that we Fashion Editors can't get enough of. In a glossed cracked brown leather, the colour is beyond classic and will go with everything you wear. Medium in size it's big enough to fit all your daily belongings in it, and with its gloss finish and pearl embellishment, you'll be swinging this around of a night time too. Its pearl 'eye' brooch is what makes it stand apart from any other handbag around at the moment.

Booking a winter beach holiday seems like the best idea at the time, until it comes to buying clothes. When I booked my  October holiday earlier this year I swore to myself that this time I would buy everything in June when the stores are full of gingham sundresses, printed shorts and sassy bikinis. Of course, it didn't happen. Despite clinging onto last year's old summer wardrobe, which I strongly believe in re-using, often you just need a couple of key new pieces to make it feel oh-so 2017.

My first pit stop for holiday shopping out of season will always be ASOS, with their all-year round 'Beachwear & Swimwear' section, they're guaranteed to save your skin with different swimwear brands as well as their own and at great prices. But, if you're as swimwear-obsessed as me, you'll want go above and beyond to get the perfect #instaworthy wardrobe. To save you the endless blogger-stalking, I've done the hard work for you with this totally shoppable guide to the brands that sell swimwear all year long.

I must admit, when the fashion set started talking about PVC trousers last year I swore I'd never get a pair. They felt tacky and, to be honest, I didn't want to face the struggle of trying to squeeze into them and have two shiny sausages for legs or, worse, for them to embarrassingly split on a night out. The latter has actually happened to me once, and I'm still reliving the shame.

But, after a small trial run last year, I'm thrilled this super slick trend is back and better than before. And, this time, it's not just trousers – we've spotted it all, from macs to skirts to jumpers. What I've found, is that this plastic trend can seriously boost your confidence and elevate your look. I expected to look and feel vile in my PVC pants but, surprisingly, I felt amazing.

Ellery, Calvin Klein and Marni all featured super glossy pieces on their AW17 catwalks that somehow looked both chic and cool. But for AW17 it's not just the designers that have nailed the look; ASOS has the perfect letterbox red mac, while Zara has a pair of clear plastic boots that I'm seriously into. There are also lots of pieces with a plastic outer layer, such as Calvin Klein’s checked trench coat with a plastic coating.

The key to wearing this in real life, and not feel like you’re dressed in some sort of weird bondage vibe, is to pick a single piece of PVC and style up with something simple and sophisticated, like an oversized crisp stripe shirt with vinyl pants or a white tee under your plastic mac.

I strongly advise you to try this trend. It’s a definite #instaworthy look that’s for sure and you might just unleash your inner fierce.

It was at the AW17 shows in February that we drooled over Miu Miu's totally sheer PVC raincoat and dreamed of being draped in Gucci's full sequin body suit (mask included), but it's not until the diluted versions of these trends start dropping into stores that we start to get a jist of what we should really be wearing.

I, personally, couldn’t wait to get stuck into trying this season's key trends in real life. But, despite being totally obsessed with new trends, I too often am on a strict budget when it comes to shopping, so I always look for ways to incorporate them into my existing wardrobe. Especially the more tricky trends: disco, I'm looking at you. So, below, I've played around with my take on the biggest fall fashion trends and have popped in links so you can shop every piece – and more – as you go.

    The One-Piece Wonder: The Dress

I walked away from so many of the biggest shows, like Preen by Thornton Breggazzi, Loewe and Off_White, thinking: ‘I need that dress’. They were the asymmetric, all-ruffled, mixed print stand-out pieces that you can see yourself wearing literally everywhere. With a chunky platform heel for the evening or with a roll neck underneath for winter daytime dressing. I love a dress but don’t like being too girly, so I styled with a chunky biker boot for a bit more edge. These are also one of the biggest boot trends for fall so you’d be silly not to grab a pair. Comfort first!

Calling all jewellery lovers, you're going to be head over heels in love with Zara's huge new earring collection. For Winter '17 they've jumped right on the statement earring trend that we've seen everywhere on the catwalks, from Saint Laurent to Roksanda, and bought it to us for a fraction of the price.

From mesh diamanté danglers to colourful beaded tassles and faux pearl drops, they've created every statement stye we've always dreamed of owning – for around £12.99 (prices vary from £9.99- £15.99). They couldn't have come at a better time as we start to gear up for party month.

Don't forget, they're not just 'out-out' earrings, though. Style with your everyday work suit or an all-black look to totally bring it to life with a brand new spin.

I am thrilled it’s finally jumper season. Chucking an oversized mohair knit over a pair of jeans at the weekend, cosying up in cashmere on the sofa and making fine roll necks a daily uniform: there’s no better feeling. Guaranteed to keep you warm and an actual trend in their own right for Winter 2017, knitwear is a win-win situation.

They stormed the runway as single stand-out pieces, from alphine-esque prints at Loewe to deconstruction cuts at Louis Vuitton. They’ve also got a whole lot more dressed up this season, we saw them paired with silky midi skirts and tailored trousers (a look I tried in my autumn fashion trend shoot, if you want inspo for how to wear this IRL). Fair Isle, argyle and geometric-intarsia patterns were everywhere. Think country, think festive and a whole lot of grandad chic.

But where to start when finding the perfect fashionable knit? We’re not going to lie, just one of these isn’t going to cut it. Here’s an outline of the winter jumpers we suggest you invest in:

    The statement print sweatshirt

Look to nab yourself at least one of this season's on-trend sweaters. Multi-coloured crochet like J.W Anderson or with diamante embellishment like Miu Miu, these a making a serious 2017 statement. Not for the fainthearted, or to be played safe with a pair of jeans, match with a printed skirt for a full-on fashionable look.

    The fine roll neck

Whether you opt for a super fine stretchy wool or a cashmere, this style will be your absolute go-to all winter long. Pick one up in a neutral colour, such as grey or navy from the likes of Uniqlo or Marks and Spencer, and wear on their own or style underneath your favourite shirts. They’re the perfect extra layer.

    The cable knit round neck

This is your ultimate weekend warmer. Whatever the jumper weight, its ridged knit means it looks super smart with jeans or tailored trousers, yet is super easy to throw on. You’ll be inundated with options for this from Topshop to Zara to Ganni.

    V-neck cashmere

Another serious wardrobe staple that I guarantee you’ll wear until you wear it out. Opt for a finer cashmere so that you can through this on with a pair of skinny jeans or PVC pants if you’re brave enough. Add some layered gold necklaces and you've got the ideal winter evening look.

Don’t feel like you need to stick to the women’s section either, if you want an oversized boyfriend fit, head straight to the men's section.

It’s time to get serious about your AW17 wardrobe, and it all starts with the all-important winter coat. You’ll be thrilled to know that the stand-out favourite trends from the shows are actually totally practical and wearable – AND, the high street has nailed them all.

If you're anything like me you'll find buying the perfect coat daunting. With hundreds of styles out there and so many different occasions to need one for, it’s hard to know where to start. They’re not cheap, either. Quality is so important when it comes your seasonal cover-up so don’t cut corners as you’ll only end up having to replace a cheap one.

Here’s a heads up on the key coat trends you should be looking out for when picking yours, and exactly what kinds of occasions you can wear them all.

    Ski Chic

Last season was all about the puffa. The warmest ‘on trend’ coat we’d seen for a while, naturally, we all went mad over it. I'm thrilled that they’re back again, but this time round they’ve all got an element of ski-chic. Think chevron stripe prints across the chest, super high zip necks and large Velcro strips. Functionality at it’s best, you’ll be wearing these day in day out.

Styling tip: Dress this off-duty jacket up with some heeled boots for a 2017 spin.

    Checks and Plaids

This trend isn't breaking news, I'm sure you will agree, but we are all about heritage dressing, and this season it’s seriously stepped up a notch. Think oversized silhouettes, double breasted, clashing checks and belted waists. Super smart, this coat trend is one you’ll be wearing not just to the office everyday but with denim and boots on the weekend, too. This really is one of the most wearable styles that everyone should own.

The classic trench is, of course, not going anywhere, and rightly so. This is the perfect transitional cover up and great for this time of year. There are lots of updates this season, from Preen by Thornton Breggazzi’s frilly edge trench to Wanda Nylon's plastic-coated one. Of course, you don’t have to break the bank and rest assured Next and Mango are owning this style this season. I’m really into the mixed fabric trenches that are around right now, with either check or PVC paneling.

    Hot Fuzz

It wouldn’t be winter without some fuzz, and this season is no different. We’re seriously into those Saks Potts fuzzy coloured coats and thrilled that the likes of Mango have also gone in on the bright teddy bear jackets. Short cut shearling is also everywhere in creams, beiges and browns – I cannot wait to cosy up in one of them.

Okay, so these may look a little scary. But get past the dominatrix vibe and you’ll be street style-ready as these babies sure do stand out. You’ll find these PVC coated trenches, aviator jackets and even shearling lined boxy jackets at almost any price point from the likes of Marni right the way to Topshop (by the way, why not check out our edit of the best Black Friday Topshop deals?). Give them a go and we swear this will be your go-to evening coat.

If the AW17 runways taught us nothing else, it’s that you can never have too much glitz for this season. From full length sequin dresses at Emilia Wickstead and Rochas to metallic spray-on party pants at Isabel Marant. Oh, and did we mention Gucci’s sequin face mask?! Somehow we can't quite see us rocking that one at a work away day. But, one thing that differs with the trend this winter is that we’re not saving the bling for the festive season, we’re shopping and wearing it RN.

So, what should you be buying and how should sparkle be worn in a chic, 2017 way? Basically, think 80’-style Saint Laurent and dress it down. So, if you’re opting for a long sleeve sequin top like Vanessa Bruno (in the shopping edit below) then style with a straight legged jean to toughen it up. A kitten heel or boot would work best to accessorize but steer clear of stilettos as you want to avoid making it look tacky. Metallic pants are also everywhere at the moment and are the perfect injection of sparkle to your look. These can be teamed with a super skinny stiletto then pair back with a fine knit jumper on top.

Sequin, embellished and molten metallic accessories are also having a serious moment, and the perfect solution if you don’t quite want to brave it with clothing. Uterque’s sequin slippers are my personal favourite accessory of the season, and I'm already wearing them pretty much everyday!

Topshop are the high street masters when it comes to denim. There is nowhere better. The proof? A pair of Topshop MOTO jeans is sold every 10 seconds and, at Topshop's Flagship store on Oxford Street, the brand shifts one pair every minute.

And, of course, that makes sense. We all own at least two pairs of Topshop jeans (and I bet one of those pairs is a Topshop black skinny jean!). Once you’ve found your favourite style, if you're like me, you'll keep going back to update them as new washes and colourways come out, and you’ve finally worn your old pair to death.

Here’s a guide to each of Topshop's classic jean styles so you can find the right one for you.

    Topshop MOTO Joni Jeans

Skin tight and ultra high-rise with a retro silhouette. The super-stretchy Joni jeans are made for the fashion brave and, with no front pockets, are the closest thing to a “jegging”. Their high elastane percentage means they’re actually super comfy to wear and really do well to hold you in.

    Topshop MOTO Jamie Jeans

High rise and ankle grazing, these skinny jeans are said to fit pretty much all shapes. With multiple pockets and a great level of stretch, they look and feel great. Coming in a wide range of styles from raw edge to step hems, ripped and even vinyl, I can assure you these are the ultimate Topshop skinny.

    Topshop MOTO Mom Jeans

This fashionable retro style features a high-rise waist, looser leg fit that tapers towards the hem. The more rigid denim doesn’t have much stretch at all so ensure you pick a size that you feel comfortable in. You’ll find this style in a vast range of styles from acid wash to ripped and even embroidered. Embroidery is a newish thing for Topshop and they have totally nailed it. Their could-by-designer appliqués will have people double-taking and asking where you got them from.

    Topshop MOTO Leigh Jeans

This skinny style is super similar to the Jamie but with a lower rise waist band. The perfect everyday staple style still has the ankle grazing hem which is super flattering and again has a great stretch for comfort. You’ll find these in all of your favourite classic washes from grey to indigo to white.

    Topshop MOTO Hayden Jeans

Made for busy weekends and off-duty days, the low-sling Hayden jeans are your go-to for casual dressing. Cut in an oversized boyfriend fit, these are best worn with the hem rolled up.

    Topshop MOTO Dree Jeans

Keep it current with the newest of the styles and my personal favourite, the Dree kick flare jeans. Made of low stretch denim, this stylish ankle-showing fit is the fash-pack's go-to style. High in the waist, they’re also super flattering and work for both day and night with either a heel or a flat.

    Topshop Jeans Size Guide

It’s always so hard when buying jeans online to know what size to order, but at the same time if you’re anything like me you can’t bare the thought of going into store after work and squeezing yourself into countless pairs whilst sweating profusely. Guilty of ordering the same pair in three sizes, it’s really not ideal when your £120 down in your bank account for about month before you finally return them.

So, how do they actually fit size-wise? I personally find they come up very slightly large if not true to size. I am between a sizes in their jeans (between 8 and 10) which is super annoying, but I do find they tend to stretch quite a bit so I recommend you get the size that’s slightly snug and spend the week wearing them in. Previously I’ve played it safe and got the 10 and within a few weeks they’ve stretched too much to fit correctly.

Luckily, Topshop's going to be joining in on the Black Friday madness so if you want to take a chance on their products, we've curated a list of the best Black Friday Topshop deals, as well as some additional Black Friday clothing sales and key Black Friday deals to update your wardrobe.

With this in mind, start shopping our edit of the best Topshop jean styles that are in store right now…
